But the pairing is interesting enough to deserve a straight answer — and a look at the lives of two very famous men from two very different worlds.

Quick Answer

Pope Francis and Ryan Reynolds had no relationship of any kind — not personal, not professional, not public. The Pope was the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church until his death on April 21, 2025, while Reynolds is a Canadian actor and producer best known for playing Deadpool. They never met, never exchanged public messages, and there is no record of the two ever crossing paths. If you searched for them together, what you are most likely looking for is a fact check — and this is it.

Who Are Pope Francis and Ryan Reynolds?

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the 266th pope of the Catholic Church. Elected on March 13, 2013, he was the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first non-European pope in more than 1,200 years. His 12-year papacy became known for its emphasis on humility, compassion for the poor, care for migrants, and environmental stewardship.

Ryan Reynolds, born October 23, 1976, in Vancouver, Canada, is one of the biggest movie stars of his generation. After early roles in television, he became a global star with Deadpool (2016) and its record-breaking sequels, including Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Off screen, he is known for his sharp humor, his business ventures (Aviation Gin, Mint Mobile), and his co-ownership of the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC with Rob McElhenney. He has been married to actress Blake Lively since 2012.

Relationship Timeline

There is no relationship to put on a timeline — so here is the honest chronology of the two public lives that never overlapped, plus the one event that comes closest to a link:

  • March 13, 2013 — Jorge Mario Bergoglio is elected pope, taking the name Francis. Ryan Reynolds is 36 and rising in Hollywood after Green Lantern (2011) and Safe House (2012).
  • February 2016 — Reynolds’s Deadpool opens to massive success, cementing his status as a leading man. Pope Francis is in the third year of his papacy, traveling and advocating for refugees.
  • June 14, 2024 — Pope Francis holds a famous audience with more than 100 comedians at the Vatican, including Jimmy Fallon, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert, and Conan O’Brien. This is the closest the Pope’s world ever came to Reynolds’s world — but Ryan Reynolds was not among the invited comedians.
  • July 2024 — Deadpool & Wolverine premieres, starring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and goes on to earn over $1.3 billion worldwide.
  • April 21, 2025 — Pope Francis dies at age 88 in Vatican City on Easter Monday, following a period of hospitalization for double pneumonia.
  • April 26, 2025 — The Pope’s funeral is held in St. Peter’s Square, and he is buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, per his wishes.
  • May 7–8, 2025 — The papal conclave elects Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, succeeding Francis.
  • July 2026 — Ryan Reynolds confirms at Fanatics Fest 2026 that another Deadpool film is in development, telling fans he has begun writing ideas.

That is the full story: two enormous public figures whose lives ran in parallel but never intersected. One entertaining wrinkle — the shared surname “Reynolds” — briefly connected their names in headlines when children’s-book author Peter H. Reynolds and his twin brother Paul released Our Treasures Within, a 2026 book built around Pope Francis’s message. Ryan Reynolds the actor has no involvement in that project; it is simply a case of mistaken identity in a search box.

Latest Updates

As of October 2026, Ryan Reynolds remains active in film and business. In July 2026 he publicly confirmed that a new Deadpool movie is in the works, saying he had started writing material and hinted the film could function as an ensemble piece with X-Men characters rather than another solo outing. No release date or director has been announced.

On the Vatican side, the Church has moved into a new era under Pope Leo XIV, elected in May 2025. Pope Francis’s legacy continues to be discussed: his diaries and writings have drawn renewed attention, and his burial at Santa Maria Maggiore — outside the Vatican, per his personal request — remains a point of interest for pilgrims and historians.

There has been no new development linking the two men, and there is no reason to expect one: Pope Francis has passed away, and Reynolds has never indicated any personal connection to the Vatican beyond being a public figure in an industry the late pope occasionally engaged with.

No. There is no record of any meeting, audience, or exchange between Ryan Reynolds and Pope Francis.

Is Pope Francis still alive?
No. Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025, at age 88, after a 12-year papacy. He was succeeded by Pope Leo XIV.

What are Ryan Reynolds’s latest projects?
As of 2026, Reynolds has confirmed that another Deadpool film is in development, with him involved in writing. He continues to co-own Wrexham AFC and remains married to actress Blake Lively. For more explainers at AllAboutFacts, browse our celebrity coverage.
